So, how to write a good story —-
Here is a distillation of everything about writing a good story. It makes writing your account a little easier, but more than that, it challenges you to step deeper into your exploration of how to write it.
- Draft at One Stretch—
Write the first draft in as short a time as possible. If you’re writing a short story, try writing in one stretch.
Do not worry about outlining beforehand. You can do this once you know you have a story to tell. You are like an archaeologist digging an ancient city out of the clay. You may have a clue about where your city is —beforehand, but you do not know what it would look like–until it is unearthed.
That’s to say, get digging!
- Suspense and Drama–
To create suspense, set up a — obvious question. A fair question is something like, “Is he/she going to make it?” or “Will she get the man of her dreams?” By putting your protagonist’s future in doubt, you make the reader think as to–What happens next?
- Create Visibility rather than Announce–
When something exciting happens in your story that changes the fate of your character, do not tell about it— show the scene! Your readers have the right to see the best parts of the story play out in front of them. Show the interesting parts of your account.
- Inscribe Good Dialogue–
Good Dialogues come from two things— secret knowledge of your characters and rewriting. Make sure your characters all sound different, and to do that—read each character’s dialogue and question yourself, “Does this sound like my character?” If the answer is Yes, then you are good. But if you said no, then you have some rewriting to do.
- Log Death of the Character–
Think about the novels you read so far. In how many of them did the character die? Good stories often involve death. ‘Death’ is the universal theme because every person who lives will surely die one day. Tap the power of death.
- Edit Like a Professional
Most professional writers– write three drafts at least. Your first draft is the chance to explore your story and figure out what it is all about.
The second draft is meant for significant structural changes and for clarifying the characters of your novel or the fundamental ideas of your book.
The third draft is for deep polishing. This is the fun part!
- Know the Rules to break them–
Good Writers– know all the rules and follow them. Great writers–know all rules and break them too. However, the best writers do not break the rules arbitrarily. They cut them because their stories require a whole new set of rules. Respect the rules but remember that you–do not serve the rules, you help your stories.
- Share the Work–
You surely write better when you know someone will soon be reading what you have written. When you share your script, you face possibilities of failure. This will make you write the best story you can.
